Microsoft is giving its biggest step to move beyond the Windows operating system since the Chief Executive Satya Nadella has initiated a reassessment of the company's strategy as its main software product, two years ago.
The company announced on Monday (7) that, for the first time, put one of its main products in the Linux environment, selling a version of its database software that would operate with the open-source operating system.
So far, the SQL Server software was sold only in standard Windows, reflecting the tight integration that Microsoft traditionally employs to protect revenue that derives with your operating system.
" I think it was a religious thing ", said Merv Adrian, an analyst at Gartner, about Microsoft's determination not to go beyond Windows, in years when the company was under the command of Steve Ballmer, Nadella's predecessor. " we would have loved to see this approach with Linux five years ago; was what we should do at that time. " Ballmer has adopted a position of vigorous hostility to Linux, at one point describing the open source code as a " " cancer that devoured the business of commercial software.
" AGGRESSIVE " however, Nadella said the change in strategy would offer Microsoft a chance to conquer space in the (much larger) software market database that does not operate with Windows, and denied that it would result in " " of cannibalization Microsoft operating system, leading customers to opt for Linux.
" want to be aggressive in exploiting every opportunity ", he said. Asked if the launch represented direct attack at Oracle, the company that leads the market of software for databases, he added that " for sure, they are over ". The new software must not reach the market before half of 2017.
In previous advances beyond Windows, Nadella ordered the Office 365 service, which provides Office applications in the cloud, were adapted to operate on mobile devices powered by Android and iOS operating systems, Google and Apple respectively. Last week, Microsoft also acquired Xamarin, a privately held company that produces software tools for developers to create apps for the Android and iOS operating systems.
These decisions were caused by the failure of Microsoft to conquer space in the Smartphone market with Windows, which forced the company to look for other ways to reach consumers using mobile devices. In contrast, the decision to transform the SQL Server software for multiple platforms comes from a position of strength.
VALUES Microsoft overcame IBM and won second place in the market for database software, which moves US $ 32 billion annually, in the period 2011-2014, according to the Gartner research group, though its market share, 21 percent, is only half of Oracle's participation.
Scott Guthrie, the Executive who runs the cloud computing group and Microsoft business products, indicated that the price of the software would be aligned with the company charge for Windows, a level that he defined as " desordenador " to the other companies in the databases.
Microsoft mentions price $ 13 1000 by installing your database software in most basic servers, compared with a list price of more than $ 100 1000 for a similar license from Oracle, when considered several additional resources that companies usually hire, according to Donald Feinberg, an analyst at Gartner.
The discounts offered by Oracle means that in many cases customers pay significantly less than the list price, he said, Microsoft's software still probably should get out much cheaper.

I believe it took to make that decision to be multiplatform, if Oracle and IBM already did that, Microsoft it took to wake up to this reality in your SQL SERVER.
